GEC Supports NRC Leadership Selections

September 3, 2015

Good Energy Collective enthusiastically supports the re-confirmation of David Wright as the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), as well as the recent nomination of Ho Nieh for NRC commissioner.

Chairman Wright’s confirmation takes an important step toward steadying the agency in the wake of recent changes, helping to ensure that it functions effectively at this pivotal stage when there is much work to be done throughout the nuclear industry.

Chairman Wright is an experienced leader and well-liked figure with a strong history of public service. He is known for being pragmatic and non-ideological, focusing on the big picture of getting the job done. He played a key role in the passage and implementation of the bipartisan ADVANCE Act, demonstrating his commitment to modernizing the NRC’s mission to enable the safe and efficient deployment of advanced nuclear technologies. After a period of turmoil at the NRC, Wright’s proven track record of building consensus will help ensure the agency remains laser-focused on the long-term safety, advancement, and success of the U.S. nuclear energy industry.

GEC also applauds the nomination of Ho Nieh to the post of NRC commissioner. Nieh brings extensive experience, including close to two decades at the NRC, serving in key leadership roles across the agency. His work at the global scale with the International Atomic Energy Agency and OECD Nuclear Energy Agency will be a valuable asset to the NRC in safely modernizing the industry and ensuring its place at the forefront of providing clean, reliable energy to meet rapidly growing demand.

Nieh is a capable leader, well prepared for this moment, and his confirmation as the fourth member of the NRC would bring the agency closer to its full slate of five commissioners. A full slate is necessary for the agency to carry out its mission effectively and without delay, and we look forward to seeing a full commission roll up its sleeves and get to work on the important tasks ahead.

An independent, fully staffed commission is not merely a regulatory ideal but a practical necessity for the long-term success of America's nuclear energy sector. When the NRC operates with stability and autonomy, it builds public trust and investor confidence, both of which are critical to advancing clean energy goals.

Wright and Nieh are strong choices for moving the NRC in this direction, building public confidence, and streamlining the agency’s regulatory processes without sacrificing its gold standard of safety—all of which will be instrumental in unlocking nuclear energy's potential as a reliable, clean power source for the future.
