Washington, D.C.--Good Energy Collective (GEC) has joined a coalition of scholars, researchers, and policy organizations urging the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to lift its longstanding prohibition on financing nuclear power projects.
In a letter sent June 30 to ADB President Masato Kanda, the signatories, including GEC Executive Director Erik Funkhouser, write that nuclear power is a reliable, low-carbon technology that can complement renewables and provide abundant electricity.
Most electricity demand growth over the next 20 years will come from low- and middle-income countries, largely in Asia, note the authors. They argue that lifting the ban would help to unlock clean energy investment and economic growth, particularly in ADB member countries, while helping to reduce global emissions.
If ADB were to lift the ban, it would echo a similar move made recently by the World Bank, which in June announced the reversal of a long-running prohibition on investing in nuclear energy projects.
